The Badminton Association of India (BAI) faced criticism earlier this year following the Indian Open, where various issues such as monkey intrusions, bird-related disruptions, aging infrastructure, subpar spectator facilities, and pollution in New Delhi’s Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium stole the spotlight. However, the venue, originally constructed for the 1982 Asian Games and renovated for the 2010 Commonwealth Games, is all set to host the BWF World Championships starting Monday.

Redemption and Ambitions

With India gearing up to host the next Commonwealth Games and aspiring to secure the 2036 Olympics, BAI is determined to showcase its capability to organize world-class tournaments and ensure that badminton remains the focal point this time around. BAI’s general secretary, Sanjay Mishra, expressed the organization’s intentions to reaffirm themselves as competent organizers and provide a seamless experience for both players and spectators.

Following the challenges faced during the Indian Open, BAI has taken several measures to enhance the venue’s amenities and address previous issues. Updates include new seating arrangements, fresh wooden flooring for the courts, improved lighting systems, and a waterproofed roof to ensure a comfortable and distraction-free environment for the players and audience.

Innovative Solutions and Preparations

One of the unique solutions adopted by BAI to deter monkey and bird interference is the use of trained langur-mimicry artists. Videos showcasing this creative approach have gained popularity on social media platforms. Indian badminton star P.V. Sindhu praised the efforts put in by BAI, emphasizing the country’s warmth, spirit, and hospitality reflected in these unconventional solutions.

Despite the challenges faced during the Indian Open, BAI remains optimistic about the upcoming BWF World Championships. With a budget of approximately Rs. 25 crore allocated for the tournament, BAI has collaborated with the Sports Authority of India to ensure that the venue is upgraded to meet international standards and provide a world-class experience for all attendees.

Anticipated Success

Sanjay Mishra highlighted that the true measure of success for BAI at the BWF World Championships would be the absence of any complaints, unlike the previous tournament. In addition to showcasing India’s organizational prowess, BAI also aims to secure medals for its players and position the country as a formidable force in the global badminton arena.

As the nation eagerly anticipates the commencement of the BWF World Championships at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium, all eyes are on BAI to deliver a flawless and memorable tournament that not only shines a spotlight on badminton but also sets the stage for India’s future endeavors in hosting major sporting events.

Historical Significance of Badminton in India

Badminton has a rich history in India, dating back to colonial times when it was introduced by British officers. Over the years, the sport has gained immense popularity and produced world-class players like Prakash Padukone, Pullela Gopichand, and Saina Nehwal, who have all left a lasting impact on the global badminton scene. India’s love for badminton runs deep, with the sport being widely played in schools, colleges, and local communities across the country.

Impact of Major Tournaments on Badminton’s Growth

Hosting prestigious events like the BWF World Championships not only elevates the status of badminton in India but also provides a platform for emerging talent to showcase their skills on an international stage. Such tournaments serve as catalysts for the growth of the sport, inspiring young players to take up badminton professionally and aim for excellence. The exposure gained from hosting global events also helps in attracting investments and sponsorships, further fueling the development of badminton infrastructure in the country.

Technological Advancements in Badminton

Technology has played a significant role in transforming the way badminton is played and viewed. From advanced racket materials to high-speed cameras for line judgments, innovations have enhanced the game’s competitiveness and spectator experience. Additionally, the use of data analytics and sports science has enabled players to optimize their performance, leading to higher levels of play and increased fan engagement.

Globalization of Badminton and India’s Role

Badminton has become a truly global sport, with countries like China, Indonesia, Denmark, and Japan dominating the international circuit. India, with its rich talent pool and growing infrastructure, has also emerged as a force to be reckoned with in the badminton world. The success of Indian players on the world stage has not only raised the profile of the sport in the country but has also inspired a new generation of athletes to pursue excellence in badminton.

Social Impact of Badminton in India

Beyond the realms of competition, badminton has also had a significant social impact in India. The sport promotes physical fitness, mental agility, and teamwork, instilling valuable life skills in players from a young age. Badminton has also become a means of empowerment, especially for women, who have excelled in the sport and broken barriers to achieve success at both national and international levels. As badminton continues to grow in popularity, its positive influence on society is likely to expand as well.

Conclusion

As India prepares to host the BWF World Championships, the spotlight is on BAI to deliver a flawless event that not only showcases the country’s organizational capabilities but also propels badminton to new heights of success and recognition. With a strong legacy of badminton excellence and a bright future ahead, India is poised to make a lasting impact on the global badminton landscape, cementing its position as a powerhouse in the sport.

A former All England champion, he has been instrumental in establishing a system that produced India’s modern badminton stars, including Saina Nehwal and P.V. Sindhu.A few years after his now-renowned academy opened its doors, India hosted the World Championships for the first time, in his backyard – Hyderabad, in 2009. India was just one of many countries taking part that year, still finding its feet on badminton’s biggest individual stage.Seventeen years on, the tournament returns to Indian soil, with New Delhi playing host this time. In those years, the country has bagged 14 medals at the World Championships, including Sindhu’s historic gold in 2019.Ahead of the Worlds that get underway on Monday, a conversation with Gopichand kept circling back to a question he has fielded for years, in one form or another: how do you measure today’s generation against his own? His answer was unambiguous: you don’t.“I think it would be very unfair to compare or even think of comparisons. Today’s challenges are today’s, and today’s opportunities are today’s. Back in the day, our aspirations and our outlook were small. Today, the kids are a lot more aware and their horizons are much bigger. They step in with an ‘I want to be a world champion’ kind of attitude,” he told Sportstar. For Gopichand, it’s a shift shaped as much by opportunity as by ambition. “Back in the day, we wanted to play well, avoid injuries and get a job. That is all we thought about. That is not the case today. Across generations, there are very different mindsets and aspirations.”For the 52-year-old, that revelation has also been personal. His daughter, Gayatri, has carved out her own career – and he was careful to draw a line between his achievements and hers.RELATED | ‘No feeling of revenge or pressure’: Ayush Shetty on facing Shi Yu Qi“She’s done well. She’s a Commonwealth medallist, got to two All England semifinals and is the highest-ranked women’s doubles player the country has ever produced. Forget about what I have done. As a parent, that makes me happy and proud. I’m rejoicing at what she’s doing and I don’t want my All England (win) to overshadow what a phenomenal job she is doing.”For all the generational gaps he pointed to, Gopichand was unambiguous about where Indian badminton goes from here.“I’m looking forward to the next generation of champions. And India hosting the World Championships again should catapult that jump and there’s a huge opportunity for us to propel further in the badminton world.”

Prannoy has been Indian badminton’s quiet engine – the fighter who kept turning up, grinding and powering the country’s rise on the world stage when the spotlight was elsewhere. But this year, the story has moved on without him.As the World championships arrive in Delhi, the responsibility of carrying India’s flag has passed to a new generation – Ayush Shetty and Lakshya Sen – while Prannoy watches from the sidelines. It’s a moment of transition, and to his credit, the 34-year-old doesn’t dodge it. He’s candid, almost disarmingly so, even as he insists the torch hasn’t left his hands just yet.“I’m not ready to give up the torch, I’ll still try for another year or two,” Prannoy tells Sportstar. “But as a player, you come to terms with the fact that there might be tough years in your career, and honestly, the last two years have been tough for me. You always want to play at the top level, and when that doesn’t happen, you’re disappointed. I would’ve loved to play in Delhi next week.”But disappointment, for Prannoy, doesn’t curdle into self-pity. Instead, he reaches for perspective – a decade-plus career’s worth of it.“The problem with us players is that we forget what we did in the last 15 years and only think about what’s coming next. You never really appreciate what happened before. I don’t even remember how many World Championships I’ve played! At this point, it’s important to acknowledge that we did what we could, and this year I couldn’t; I wasn’t at my best in the last few months and didn’t qualify. And that’s okay.”For Prannoy, the changing of the guard isn’t just an inevitability he’s grudgingly accepted. It’s a cause he actively fights for, every single day on the training court.“The next generation does have to take over eventually. Someone like me, at the age of 34 or 35, shouldn’t still be ahead of a lot of the younger players. Honestly, they should beat me at this age, they’re faster than me. I keep telling them this so that I also stay on my toes in training. I’ve always loved that push, and it’s part of why I’ve exceeded what I thought I was capable of.”And that same competitive fire, the thing that has always driven him, is what keeps him from walking away just yet.“I still feel that over the next two years I’ll put in everything to get back to the top 10. So it’s something where you keep telling the youngsters it’s not good enough yet, but you also keep checking whether they’re arriving at the right rankings at the right time. I’m not ready to give up the torch because deep down, if the body allows it, I’ll still be there and I’m not going to stop on an easy note,” he says.“I’ll try hard until the last day and see how it goes. If it doesn’t work out, I’m completely okay with that. This World championships is a reminder of how much someone like me and (Kidambi) Srikanth wanted to play there but couldn’t, and I’m sure it’ll push us both for the next six months, hoping that at the next big event we can be back at the top.”Until that day comes, one thing is clear: Prannoy isn’t ready to be written off. And neither, in his mind, is Srikanth.

As the highly anticipated badminton World Championships are set to kick off next week at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium, preparations are underway to ensure a smooth and uninterrupted event. One of the most unusual measures being taken involves the use of three men trained to imitate the calls of langurs, a larger species of monkey, to deter rhesus macaques from entering the stadium.

Keeping the Monkeys at Bay

The decision to employ individuals trained to make langur calls stems from a recent incident at the India Open, where a rhesus macaque managed to make its way into the spectators’ gallery and practice hall, causing a stir among players and spectators. To prevent a recurrence of such incidents, the organizers have brought in experts to mimic the sounds of langurs, which are known to scare away smaller monkeys like rhesus macaques.

Zafar, one of the men tasked with this unique job, explained, “Monkeys are very afraid of langurs, which are much bigger than them, so when we make these sounds, monkeys usually flee. We have worked in the South and North Block in New Delhi and Gurgaon previously. It is very effective.”

Comprehensive Stadium Upgrades

Aside from addressing the monkey intrusion issue, the stadium has undergone a series of upgrades to ensure a seamless and hygienic environment for players and spectators. Following multiple instances of matches being disrupted by pigeon droppings on the court during the India Open, various anti-pest measures have been put in place.

The air conditioning pipes in the ceiling have been treated with anti-pest gel, similar to what is used in New Delhi’s railway stations to deter pigeons. Ventilators have been covered, broken ceiling windows sealed, and double doors installed at all entrances to prevent avian intruders. Additionally, overhead lighting has been upgraded to ensure even illumination across the court.

Ambar Pratap Singh, Executive Director of the Sports Authority of India, Delhi, revealed, “Overhead lighting too has been upgraded. At the India Open last year, there were several areas of the court covered in shadow while other parts were blindingly bright– something that was blamed on a misalignment of the overhead spotlights.”

Enhanced Facilities for Players and Spectators

Alongside the pest control and lighting upgrades, significant efforts have been made to improve the overall facilities at the stadium. Refurbishments have been carried out on 2,500 seats, and 57 out of 66 toilets in the stadium complex have been renovated, with plans to refurbish the remaining nine.

These meticulous preparations indicate the commitment of the organizers to provide a world-class experience for both players and spectators at the upcoming badminton World Championships. With innovative solutions and attention to detail, the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium aims to set a new standard for sporting events in India.

Preventing Wildlife Intrusion in Sports Events

Wildlife intrusion in sports events is not uncommon, with animals such as birds, monkeys, and even stray dogs sometimes finding their way into stadiums and causing disruptions. In addition to the measures taken at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium for the badminton World Championships, other sports venues around the world have also faced similar challenges.

For example, Wimbledon, known for its prestigious tennis championships, has had to deal with pigeons flying onto the court during matches. To address this issue, the All England Lawn Tennis Club installed bird spikes on the roof of Centre Court to deter pigeons from roosting. Similarly, the Chase Center in San Francisco, home to the Golden State Warriors basketball team, has implemented measures to prevent seagulls from entering the arena during games.

These instances highlight the importance of wildlife management in sports facilities to ensure the safety of players, spectators, and animals alike. By implementing innovative solutions and working closely with experts in animal behavior, venues can create a harmonious environment for sporting events without compromising on the well-being of wildlife.

Technological Advancements in Sports Venue Maintenance

In addition to the manual efforts taken to deter monkeys and pigeons from entering the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium, advancements in technology have also played a role in maintaining sports venues. Automated pest control systems, such as motion-activated sprinklers or ultrasonic devices, have been used in various stadiums to keep pests at bay without harming them.

Furthermore, the use of drones for surveillance and monitoring of large stadium complexes has become increasingly common. Drones equipped with high-resolution cameras can help venue managers identify potential pest entry points, inspect hard-to-reach areas, and ensure the overall security and cleanliness of the facility.

By integrating technological solutions with traditional methods of wildlife management, sports venues can enhance their operational efficiency and effectiveness in maintaining a safe and hygienic environment for athletes and fans.

Environmental Impact of Stadium Upgrades

While the upgrades made to the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium for the badminton World Championships focus on pest control and facility improvements, it is also essential to consider the environmental impact of these measures. Using anti-pest gels and other chemical treatments may have unintended consequences on local ecosystems and wildlife.

As venues strive to balance the need for cleanliness and safety with environmental sustainability, exploring eco-friendly pest control alternatives becomes crucial. This could include implementing natural deterrents, such as planting specific vegetation that repels pests, or creating habitats for natural predators of nuisance animals.

By adopting environmentally conscious practices in stadium maintenance and wildlife management, sports venues can contribute to biodiversity conservation and demonstrate their commitment to sustainability in the sporting industry.

Conclusion

As the badminton World Championships approach, the preparations made at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium showcase the dedication of organizers to deliver a world-class sporting experience while addressing unique challenges like wildlife intrusion. By employing a combination of human expertise, technological advancements, and environmental considerations, sports venues can create safe, clean, and sustainable environments for athletes, spectators, and wildlife alike.

Earlier this year, the India Open badminton tournament faced criticism due to hygiene issues caused by monkeys and bird droppings. However, officials have assured that these problems will not be repeated at the upcoming World Championships. The prestigious event is set to return to India after 17 years and will be held at New Delhi’s Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium from August 17-23.

Addressing Past Concerns

During the India Open earlier this year, the venue came under scrutiny for its poor hygiene standards. Play was disrupted multiple times, including during a semifinal match when debris from a bird’s nest fell onto the court. Additionally, bird droppings were found on courts, and a monkey was even spotted making its way into the stands.

Sanjay Mishra, the secretary of the Badminton Association of India (BAI), expressed confidence that such issues have been resolved. He stated, “I am 100 percent sure that this time the pigeon-related or any kind of bird and animal-related problems will not occur during the world championship. All the problems that were encountered during the India Open have been solved, and this edition will prove to be one of the best world championships.”

Preparations for the World Championships

The draws for the 30th edition of the World Championships were recently announced in the national capital, with Badminton World Federation officials assuring a successful tournament. Selvaamresh Supramaniam, BWF events director of tournament operations, highlighted the extensive work done to enhance the venue’s conditions.

Supramaniam stated, “A lot of work has gone into the venue, from waterproofing to applying gel on the roofing — to stop pigeons perching on those beams. The ceiling, a lot was damaged, wirings were exposed. They are all repaired, and deep-cleaning has been done.”

He further explained, “The main reason for having the India Open at this venue was to see what we needed to do, and we achieved its objective. We know there was a lot of bad publicity, but it has driven everyone in the same direction — that we need to do this.”

Exciting Competitions Await

World number one Shi Yuqi of China is set to defend his title in the men’s singles category, while Japan’s Akane Yamaguchi will aim to replicate her success in the women’s singles after emerging victorious in Paris last year.

Badminton enthusiasts are eagerly anticipating the World Championships, with the assurance of improved hygiene standards and top-class competitive action set to make this edition a memorable one.

In addition to the measures taken to prevent birds and animals from causing disruptions, stringent cleaning protocols have been put in place to maintain high standards throughout the tournament.

The Badminton Association of India (BAI) has partnered with professional cleaning services to ensure that the venue remains pristine throughout the event. Daily inspections will be conducted to address any potential hygiene concerns promptly. Moreover, designated staff will be responsible for monitoring the cleanliness of the courts and spectator areas to guarantee a pleasant experience for players and fans alike.

Global Participation and Intense Competition

With players from around the world descending upon New Delhi for the World Championships, fans can expect a thrilling display of badminton prowess. The tournament will feature top-ranked players competing in various categories, including men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles, and mixed doubles.

Moreover, the event presents a unique opportunity for cultural exchange, as players and fans from diverse backgrounds come together to celebrate their shared passion for the sport. From traditional performances to local cuisine, attendees can experience the rich tapestry of Indian culture while enjoying world-class badminton competition.

India’s leading men’s doubles badminton duo, Chirag Shetty and Satwik Rankireddy, have had a rollercoaster of a season so far. Despite facing setbacks due to injuries, they are gearing up for their next big challenge at the upcoming badminton World Championships in New Delhi.

Season Overview

The pair started the season with a modest performance but gradually gained momentum, reaching the quarterfinals of the Swiss Open, finals in Thailand, and clinching the title in Singapore. However, their winning streak was interrupted when Satwik had to withdraw from two consecutive tournaments in Indonesia and Japan due to a recurring shoulder injury that has been bothering him for almost a decade.

Coach Tan Kim Her remains optimistic about their chances at the World Championships despite the recent injury concerns. He believes that both players will be in shape for the upcoming event. Satwik has been undergoing rehabilitation for his shoulder, and Chirag is reportedly fully fit.

Coach Tan’s Expectations

Coach Tan emphasizes the significance of major tournaments like the World Championships and the Asian Games in shaping the players’ season. He believes that winning a Super 750 or reaching a semifinal in the BWF Tour is valuable as it prepares the players for the biggest stages of badminton.

Tan acknowledges that injuries will remain a significant variable in their quest for a world title, especially considering Satwik’s persistent shoulder issue. Despite the challenges, he remains positive about the duo’s performance at the upcoming championship.

Preparation and Challenges

While the players have been working on their physical fitness and rehabilitation, Tan highlights the importance of mental confidence in their performance. He reveals that they are also receiving support from a psychologist to enhance their mental strength.

Tan acknowledges the competitive landscape of men’s doubles badminton, with most top players being evenly matched. He believes that success in the game hinges on factors like service, receiving, and mental toughness. Reflecting on the Korean pair’s consistency, he sets them as the benchmark in the discipline.

Tournament Strategy

Tan emphasizes the importance of focusing on one match at a time rather than getting ahead of themselves with expectations of reaching specific rounds in tournaments. He draws from past experiences, particularly the high expectations surrounding the 2024 Olympics, to simplify their approach and reduce pressure on the players.

Looking ahead to the World Championships, Tan believes that if Satwik and Chirag maintain their mental freshness and physical health, they have the potential to outperform the world’s best. He remains hopeful that the duo will deliver a standout performance at the championship that could define their season.

In conclusion, the Indian men’s doubles badminton pair is gearing up for the challenge at the World Championships with a focus on physical fitness, mental strength, and a strategic approach to the tournament. As they prepare to face tough competition on the court, all eyes will be on Chirag Shetty and Satwik Rankireddy as they aim to make their mark in the world of badminton.

Path to Success

Chirag Shetty and Satwik Rankireddy’s journey to becoming India’s top men’s doubles badminton pair has been marked by dedication, hard work, and resilience. Both players have shown tremendous improvement over the years, honing their skills and developing a strong partnership on the court. Their ability to communicate and understand each other’s game has been crucial in their success, allowing them to complement each other’s strengths and cover for weaknesses effectively.

Furthermore, the support system around the duo has played a pivotal role in their progress. Coach Tan Kim Her’s guidance and mentorship have been instrumental in shaping their game and preparing them for the challenges of elite-level competition. His strategic insights, technical expertise, and unwavering belief in the players have instilled confidence and motivation in Chirag and Satwik, helping them navigate through tough times and emerge stronger.

Challenges Faced

Like any professional athletes, Chirag and Satwik have faced their fair share of challenges along the way. Injuries, such as Satwik’s recurring shoulder issue, have posed significant obstacles, forcing the players to adapt their training routines, seek medical interventions, and stay resilient in the face of setbacks. The mental toll of injuries and the pressure to perform at the highest level can take a toll on athletes, but the duo’s determination and perseverance have helped them overcome these hurdles.

Additionally, the competitive landscape of men’s doubles badminton presents its own set of challenges. With top players from around the world vying for titles and rankings, maintaining consistency, staying ahead of the competition, and continuously improving are essential for success. Chirag and Satwik have embraced these challenges head-on, constantly pushing themselves to raise the bar and elevate their game to compete with the best in the world.

Future Prospects
