Borussia Dortmund vs Real Betis: Effenberg Warns of Champions League Upset
Borussia Dortmund have been urged to approach their Champions League meeting with Real Betis cautiously, despite the Spanish visitors lacking the high-profile reputation of Europe’s biggest clubs. Former Germany international Stefan Effenberg believes Betis are capable of troubling Dortmund and says the hosts must judge their opponents by their performances—not their name.
The sides meet at Signal Iduna Park on Wednesday evening, with Dortmund facing a demanding stretch of European fixtures. Betis arrive in strong form, carrying confidence from an unbeaten start to their Champions League campaign and a competitive position in LaLiga. For supporters looking ahead to the match, the key question is whether Dortmund can impose their attacking style without leaving openings for Betis to exploit.
Effenberg: Dortmund must not underestimate Betis
In a column for t-online, Effenberg warned that Dortmund could be caught out if they take Betis lightly. The Spanish club sit fourth in LaLiga, close to the country’s leading sides, and have already shown they can compete with elite opposition. Their recent 1-0 home victory over Real Madrid underlined the threat they pose.
“Dortmund could be in for a nasty surprise against Betis in particular,” Effenberg wrote, stressing that the Bundesliga side should not be distracted by the difference in reputation between the clubs. Betis have built a team capable of controlling possession, moving the ball quickly and punishing defensive mistakes—qualities that can make them dangerous away from home.
Effenberg also pointed to the wider Champions League schedule. Dortmund are due to travel to London to face Arsenal before hosting Inter Milan, meaning the Betis match is part of a challenging run rather than an isolated test. A poor result could increase pressure ahead of those fixtures, while a strong performance would provide valuable momentum.
Kovac expects a technical and flexible opponent
Dortmund coach Niko Kovac has also made clear that he respects Betis. Speaking before the match, the Croatian described them as a “very, very good team” with a recognisable Spanish approach and a strong preference for possession.
However, Kovac’s assessment went beyond their ability to keep the ball. Betis can switch play quickly and effectively, he noted, making them difficult to contain if Dortmund’s defensive shape becomes stretched. That could place particular importance on the hosts’ pressing, midfield coverage and ability to recover quickly after losing possession.
Betis have made an impressive start to their Champions League campaign, winning their first three matches. They edged Lille 3-2 away from home, then followed up with victories over Porto by the same score and Feyenoord 1-0. Those results suggest a side comfortable in close contests, with enough attacking quality to score and enough discipline to protect a narrow lead.
Match prediction: Dortmund’s home advantage and attacking depth make them a formidable opponent, but Betis have the form and tactical organisation to keep the contest close. A high-tempo match could suit Dortmund if they press intelligently; if Betis are allowed to dictate possession, the visitors may create a genuine upset opportunity. The most important factor may be Dortmund’s ability to defend transitions and avoid giving Betis space to counter.
Jobe Bellingham earns praise for his progress
There is positive news for Dortmund away from the immediate match build-up, with sporting managing director Lars Ricken praising the development of midfielder Jobe Bellingham. The 21-year-old has become a consistent presence in Kovac’s team after a mixed first season at the club.
Ricken said Bellingham’s improvement has not surprised Dortmund, pointing to his strong internal motivation and commitment to learning. According to the club executive, the midfielder regularly seeks feedback from coaches and uses video analysis to identify areas where he can improve.
Bellingham joined Dortmund from Sunderland in 2025 for a reported €30.5 million. He has made 13 appearances in all competitions this season, recording three assists. Ricken highlighted his defensive work, particularly his ability to close spaces and disrupt opposition attacks. Bellingham has also been used in a more advanced role, giving Kovac additional flexibility in midfield.
The Englishman has already scored for Dortmund, finding the net during the 2025 Club World Cup in a 4-3 win over Mamelodi Sundowns. Ricken said he would be pleased to see Bellingham score again, but the midfielder’s growing influence is not measured by goals alone. His energy, positional awareness and willingness to contribute in different areas have made him an increasingly important part of the squad.
Bartra’s emotional return to Dortmund
Wednesday’s match will also bring a personal reunion for Betis defender Marc Bartra, who previously played for Dortmund. Club president Hans-Joachim Watzke described Bartra as a “truly fine person” and said those at the club were looking forward to seeing him again—while joking that he would prefer the defender to save his headed goals for another opponent.
Bartra’s connection with Dortmund is shaped by a traumatic event. In 2017, he was injured when explosives were detonated beside the team bus before a match. He suffered a broken wrist and injuries from fragments embedded in his arm. The attack had a profound effect on the club and its players, and the aftermath contributed to tensions between Watzke and then-coach Thomas Tuchel over how the team should respond.
Bartra left Dortmund in early 2018, having joined from Barcelona less than two years earlier. Now 35, he is a regular at centre-back for Betis and expects a difficult night in Germany. He has spoken of the challenge of playing at Signal Iduna Park, while making clear that Betis will travel with ambition as well as respect.
The defender believes his current side have the experience, talent and established identity required to compete against major opponents. That confidence reflects Betis’ recent results—and reinforces Effenberg’s warning that Dortmund should prepare for a serious test.
Dortmund’s upcoming fixtures
After the Betis match, Dortmund return to Bundesliga action against SV Elversberg before travelling to face Borussia Mönchengladbach. Their Champions League schedule then continues with a trip to Arsenal, followed by a home game against Bayer Leverkusen in the league. With demanding opponents across both competitions, a composed performance on Wednesday could be crucial to building confidence for the weeks ahead.
