Konstantinos Karetsas Injury Raises Concern for Borussia Dortmund
Borussia Dortmund are waiting for further medical checks after teenage midfielder Konstantinos Karetsas suffered an ankle injury during the Bundesliga match against Union Berlin. The 18-year-old was forced off in the second half of the goalless draw at the Alte Försterei, leaving the club and its supporters concerned about the potential length of his absence.
Karetsas had entered the match as a substitute in the 62nd minute, replacing Maximilian Beier. His appearance was cut short just minutes later, when he attempted to turn away from Union midfielder Rani Khedira near the edge of Dortmund’s penalty area. His foot appeared to catch in the turf as he changed direction, causing his leg to buckle and leaving him in visible pain.
Medical staff came onto the pitch to assess the midfielder. Dortmund captain Nico Schlotterbeck quickly signalled to the bench that Karetsas could not continue, and the player was helped off the field. US prospect Mathis Albert replaced him in the 70th minute.
Dortmund Await a Clear Injury Diagnosis
The club has not yet confirmed the severity of Karetsas’ injury. Lars Ricken, Borussia Dortmund’s managing director of sport, said additional examinations would be needed before a diagnosis could be made.
“We will have to carry out further examinations to determine how serious the injury is. We can’t give a diagnosis yet,” Ricken said. His comments reflect the uncertainty surrounding the incident: while the mechanism of injury appeared concerning, only scans and a medical assessment can establish whether Karetsas has suffered a minor sprain or a more significant problem.
Head coach Niko Kovac also expressed hope that the injury would not keep the midfielder out for long. “We now have to see whether it’s something more serious or not. I hope it isn’t, of course,” he said, adding that he felt sorry for the young player after a difficult run of recent weeks.
Dortmund defender Waldemar Anton offered a possible explanation for the injury after the final whistle, suggesting that Karetsas’ foot may have become caught in the playing surface. “I hope it’s nothing serious,” Anton told Sky. “It looks like his foot got caught in the turf and his leg buckled a little.” Union’s Khedira also wished his opponent a speedy recovery, saying he hoped Karetsas would not be sidelined for too long.
A Challenging Spell for the Greek Midfielder
The injury comes at a frustrating time for Karetsas, who arrived at Dortmund from KRC Genk in a reported €30 million summer transfer. The highly rated Greek attacking midfielder made a strong early impression, and the move marked a major step in the career of a player still only 18. Dortmund’s investment reflects the club’s belief in his technical quality and long-term potential.
However, Karetsas has been working to regain his form after collapsing during Dortmund’s Champions League match against Villarreal in early September. The latest setback threatens to interrupt his efforts to build rhythm and establish himself in Kovac’s side. For a young player adapting to a new club, league and tactical system, regular training and match minutes are particularly valuable.
Gregor Kobel underlined the importance of Karetsas to the squad, warning that another spell on the sidelines would be a blow. The goalkeeper said losing the midfielder for an extended period “would really hurt us.” That concern is understandable: Karetsas offers Dortmund an attacking option capable of operating between the lines, carrying the ball into advanced areas and creating opportunities in tight spaces.
What the Injury Could Mean for Dortmund
The immediate priority is establishing the extent of the damage. An ankle injury can vary significantly in severity, from a short-term sprain to a problem requiring a longer rehabilitation period. Until the results of Karetsas’ examinations are known, Dortmund will be unable to set a reliable return date or determine whether he can feature in upcoming domestic and European fixtures.
His absence, if prolonged, could also affect Dortmund’s options in the attacking midfield positions. Kovac may need to adjust his rotation, give another player additional minutes or alter the balance of the team depending on the opponent. That does not mean one substitute can replicate Karetsas’ qualities, but it does make squad depth and flexibility more important as the schedule becomes increasingly demanding.
Dortmund’s 0-0 draw in Berlin offered little attacking reward, and the loss of Karetsas during the second half added to the frustration. The match itself was a tightly contested Bundesliga encounter, with Union making life difficult for the visitors and limiting clear openings. For Dortmund, the result and the injury together made for an uneasy evening.
Recovery Will Take Priority Over a Return Date
For now, there is no confirmed timeline for Karetsas’ recovery. Dortmund will likely wait for the medical findings before deciding on treatment and rehabilitation. A cautious approach would be especially important with a young player whose development depends on maintaining long-term fitness, rather than rushing back for a short-term gain.
Supporters will be watching for updates from the club, particularly with the Champions League calendar adding pressure to an already busy season. Any prediction about when Karetsas could return remains premature until the tests are complete. The most encouraging outcome would be a minor injury that allows him to resume training after a brief recovery period; a more serious diagnosis would require patience from both the player and the club.
Despite the uncertainty, the reaction from Dortmund’s staff and teammates showed how highly Karetsas is regarded. Anton, Kobel and Kovac all voiced concern, while Khedira’s message offered a reminder of the sportsmanship that can emerge in the middle of a tense football match. Dortmund will now hope the examinations bring positive news and that their young Greek signing can soon return to the pitch, continue adapting to the Bundesliga and fulfil the promise that made him one of the club’s most notable summer arrivals.
